Daniel 8:14 presents the longest time prophecy in the Bible. To understand it, we need to look at the **Earthly Sanctuary**, which was a "scale model" of the heavenly one. The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) was the day when the sanctuary was cleansed from the records of sins accumulated during the year.
In symbolic prophecies, God uses one day to represent a year. This principle is inNumbers 14:34andEzekiel 4:6. Thus, 2300 evenings and mornings are 2300 literal years.
Daniel 9:25 gives the starting date: "the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem". The final and complete decree was given by Artaxerxes in457 B.C.
Understanding that 2300 evenings and mornings equal 2300 literal years is the key to unlocking this prophecy (Numbers 14:34).
The time granted especially to the Jewish people ended in 34 A.D., after which the gospel went to the whole world.
The 70 weeks (490 years) were fulfilled exactly, confirming that the 2300 years ended in 1844.
Knowing that Jesus Christ is doing the final work before returning to Earth and taking His people, do you want to prepare yourself to be ready when He comes?

- Parallel to the day of atonement
- Leviticus 16:29, 23:27 - After 1844: Afflict the soul
| Event | Calculation | Final Date |
|---|---|---|
| Decree of Artaxerxes | Beginning of the Prophecy | 457 B.C. |
| Cut of the 70 weeks | 490 years for the Jews | 34 A.D. |
| Remainder of the Prophecy | 2300 - 490 = 1810 years | 1844 A.D. |
*Note: When going from B.C. to A.D., we add 1 year because there is no year zero.
In historical chronology, there is no year zero. The count goes directly from year 1 B.C. to year 1 A.D. Therefore, when calculating prophecies that cross these eras (such as the 2300 years), we must add 1 year to the mathematical result. For example: 2300 - 457 = 1843. Adding the adjustment year due to the absence of year zero, we arrive at1844.
Jesus did not return to Earth, but changed phases in His heavenly ministry. He entered theMost Holy Placeof the Heavenly Sanctuary to begin the Investigative Judgment (the purification of the sanctuary), the last step before His coming.
It places us in the prophetic time. We live today in the "Antitypical Day of Atonement". It is the solemn time when our cases are being examined in the court of God. It is the time to"afflict the soul"in repentance. (Leviticus 16:29; 23:27)
In Daniel 8:27, he says he was "astonished at the vision, and there was none to understand it". He feared that the 2300 years meant an extension of the captivity in Babylon. Therefore, in Daniel 9, the angel Gabriel returns specifically to explain the missing time portion.
This is the language of Creation in Genesis 1 ("And the evening and the morning were the first day"). In the sanctuary context, it refers to the continuous morning and evening sacrifices. It is a unit of measure that reinforces that we are dealing with prophetic days (literal years).
Yes, if you only subtract 457 from 2300, you would arrive at 1843. However, since the chronological scale jumps from year 1 B.C. directly to year 1 A.D., it is necessary to add one year to the mathematical calculation to obtain the correct historical time, resulting in 1844.
In the next study we will understand the meaning and work of atonement on behalf of mankind.
